Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has announced that he is gay, becoming one of the most high-profile footballers in history to confirm their homosexuality.
The Spaniard, who made 725 appearances for Los Blancos, took to social media to make the announcement and asked for ‘respect’ from his followers.
The news comes shortly after he split from his wife Sara Carbonero after they claimed to have ‘taken separate paths’ back in March 2021 – following five years of marriage.
The World Cup winner tweeted: ‘I hope you respect me: I’m gay. #happysunday’.
Shortly after Casillas’ tweet, former rival and national team-mate Carles Puyol replied in support of the goalkeeper.
The former Barcelona captain replied: ‘It’s time to tell our story, Iker’ with a heart and kiss emoji. Puyol has two children with girlfriend Vanesa Lorenzo.
