Ghana has suffered a major setback after Inaki Williams revealed that he feels more Spanish than Ghanaian and that accepting to represent the Black Stars would be unjust.
Ghana FA has been pursuing the tiring attacker over a nationality switch for over 5 years now, but the 27-year-old’s recent interview means that he might not play for the Black Stars.
“I’m grateful for where I grew up and became who I am. Ghana tried to convince me, but I was born in Spain, in Bilbao. I won’t ever forget my family roots, but I feel Basque and can’t con anyone. I would be comfortable with Ghana, I’m sure, but I shouldn’t be there.” I don’t think it would be right to take the place of someone who really deserves to go and who feels Ghana 100%.”
On 20 March 2015, Williams received his first international call-up, being named in Albert Celades’ Spain under-21 squad for friendlies with Norway and Belarus.
He made his debut on the 26th against the former, replacing goalscorer Munir El Haddadi at half-time of a 2–0 friendly win in Cartagena.
Williams was one of 11 stand-by players for Vicente del Bosque’s Spain squad at UEFA Euro 2016. Around the same time, he was also coveted by the Ghanaian national team by their Spanish scout, Gerard Nus.
He made his debut for the former on 29 May, replacing fellow debutant Marco Asensio at the hour mark of a 3–1 friendly defeat of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
