GHPL FIRST ROUND ENDS WITH KARELA ON TOP

Ayinase base club, Karela United defied the odds from being relegated last season to be table toppers at the first round of the Ghana premier league with 31 points .

Rejuvenated Accra Great Olympics whose impressive run saw them dispatching the giants of Ghana football, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak occupy the second position on the log after 17 round of matches with 30 points .

Tarkwa based Medeama FC despite the departure of their Head Coach , Samuel Boadu , amassed 27 points from a possible 51 to settle on third position . The yellow and mauve, have had an inconsistent run to their campaign, however, the arrival of Burkinabe goal poacher, Ahmed Toure could turn the fortunes for the club in the second round.

Hearts of Oak sealed the category of top four after annihilating WAFA in a 4-0 cruise at the Accra sports stadium on Sunday which was new Coach , Samuel Boadi’s first game in charge.

At the bottom of the table saw Inter Allies pick the least points in the division from the 17 matches of the first round with just 12 points and lie rock-bottom of the table. Cross-city neighbors, Liberty Professionals seem in dire need of a life-support as they’ve been woeful throughout the first round though on 15 points . King Faisal finalize the candidates for relegation on 17 points while Legon cities sits two points off the relegation zone on 15th position.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko could still join the top four with two outstanding matches, a trip to King Faisal on Wednesday and a meeting with Bechem United on the 24th of March await. The porcupines have failed to score in their last two premier league outings but they remain the best team in the league with their away record of just one defeat.

A total of 337 goals were scored in the first round with Diawisie Taylor emerging as the leading top scorer with 12 goals.

The league resumes from the weekend of 18th March.
